Women's Volleyball Swept At PLU

PARKLAND, Wash. - Haylee Pruse showcased her talents with a stellar performance, posting 14 assists and 15 kills but it came in defeat as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Pacific Lutheran in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night at Olson Auditorium. Sets scores were 25-23, 25-23, 25-20.

Courtney Cline also had an impressive outing, posting six kills and hitting at a .455 clip while also recording a match-high seven blocks. For the Lutes (11-5, 7-1 NWC), Julissa Pernsteiner led all hitters with 14 kills while adding four blocks.

Whitman (3-12, 2-6 NWC) was unable to win a set off PLU but had a chance to do so in each of them. Set one saw the Lutes get off to a hot start but Navi Islam-Zwart's kill helped flip the script and put the Blues up 11-9. Both teams traded runs which, at one point, saw Whitman up 20-17 after kills from Arina Gushchina and Quinn Pulver. The Blues could not hold on to the lead and the Lutes rallied for the one-set lead.

Set two saw the Blues get off to the hot start before PLU turned the tide. Pernsteiner caught fire and drilled three straight kills as part of a 6-0 run to put the Lutes up 9-6. PLU led for most of the remainder of the frame but the Blues never let the set get away. Then, after a 7-1 run, Whitman went up 20-19 but the Lutes regained the momentum and the lead and outlasted the Blues to the finish line.

Whitman's best shot at taking a set off the Lutes came in what turned out to be the final one. The Blues scored six of the first seven points and, while the Lutes rallied to tie the score, later opened up a 17-11 lead. Cline and Gushchina came alive on both sides of the next. Gushchina posted two kills and got in on a block with Cline who had a kill and another block as part of a 6-1 run. The momentum changed on a dime, however, as PLU went on a 14-3 set-closing run to complete the sweep.

The Blues continue their stretch of NWC road games next weekend when they visit Pacific and George Fox.
