Women's Volleyball Tops Pacific In NWC Thriller

FOREST GROVE, Ore - Arina Gushchina posted 18 kills and 13 digs to lead the Whitman College women's volleyball team to a thrilling road reverse sweep victory over Pacific in Northwest Conference action on Friday night. Set scores were 20-25, 24-26, 26-24, 25-20, 15-10.

Jamie Bartok added a team-high 21 digs for the Blues (4-12, 3-6 NWC) who were only a few points from being swept by the Boxers. After dropping the opening two sets, the second by the narrowest of margins, Whitman needed a late rally to stave off a straight-set Pacific win. Three kills in a run of five straight points turned a four-point deficit into a 19-18 lead. Back-to-back kills from Mara Murphy put the Boxers back in front but a run of three straight points, two resulting from Courtney Cline kills, gave the Blues a pair of set points. Pacific staved off both but Whitman righted the ship with two points and a set three victory.

The win swung the momentum Whitman's way and never switched back. The Blues built a six-point lead midway through the fourth set. Cline posted a kill and got in on a block to help extend her team's lead to 14-8. The lead swelled to eight points before the Boxers later ran off six unanswered points to whittle their deficit to a single point. Whitman righted the ship, however, and pulled away for the win.

The fifth and deciding set saw a kill from Emma Velcheck put the Boxers up two early. The Blues then took control and unleashed a 7-1 run capped by a trio kills from Sophie Broesamle. Whitman's offense clicked down the stretch as the final seven points resulted from kills and the Blues completed the comeback.

The Blues will look to make it a sweep on the weekend when they play George Fox on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
