Women's Volleyball Swept At George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. - Haylee Pruse paced the Blues with 15 assists and 12 digs, Jamie Bartok added a match-high 17 digs, but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College women's volleyball team lost in straight sets to George Fox in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night. Set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 26-24.

Arina Gushchina chipped in a team-best 12 kills for the Blues who were unable to sustain the momentum of a thrilling five-set victory on Friday night. For the Bruins, Addison Robertson led all hitters with 13 kills and Piper Harrop added a team-high 15 digs.

The opener saw George Fox pull ahead midway through the set but the Blues rally to cut the lead to a single point. Bella Vickers had her swing blocked as George Fox went up 18-12, but Vickers drilled a kill on the next rally to spark a 6-1 run. The Bruins steadied the tide however and pulled away for the win.

Set two featured a tight contest through the first half of the frame before Courtney Cline drilled a kill and served a pair of aces to put Whitman up four. Whitman continued to lead by four until George Fox unleashed a run of 10 unanswered points to lock down the set and take a 2-0 lead.

Whitman nearly extended the match to a fourth set but were edged in extra points in set three. The Blues held a slim through half of the set until a pair of Bruin kills evened the score at 14-14. Both teams followed up with runs as the offense clicked on both sides of the net. The teams traded points down the stretch which included a Gushchina kill to stave off a match point and make it a 24-24 score. Fox nailed down the next two points, however, and clinched the sweep.

The Blues return home for a midweek contest against Whitworth set for Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 6:00 p.m.
