Women's Volleyball Falls To Whitworth In Straight Sets

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Arina Gushchina posted a team-high eight kills, Haylee Pruse and Ivy Hicks added 12 and 11 assists, respectively, but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Whitworth in Northwest Conference action on Tuesday night at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 25-13.

Bella Vickers chipped in a team-high 10 digs and Purse added five more for the Blues (4-14, 3-8 NWC) who nearly had sets one and two swing their way.

Ella Jimenez led the Bucs with 18 kills and 13 digs while also adding four aces.

The opening set featured a seesaw affair with each team answering each other's runs. A pair of early kills helped the Bucs (19-2, 11-0 NWC) to an early lead but Whitman responded with a run of four unanswered points. Courtney Cline provided the defense with a pair of blocks and the Blues went up 5-4. Whitworth regained its early momentum and, after a run of five straight points, held a 19-13 lead and looked poised to close out the set. Back-to-back kills from Quinn Pulver and Samantha Miller whittled the deficit to three points, but the Bucs pulled away for the win.

Set two was as tight as they came as neither team led by more than two points at any point during the set, the first coming after Gushchina's kill put Whitman up 12-10. Whitworth gained a one point lead late in the set but the Blues snatched it right back after consecutive kills from Pulver and Navi Islam-Zwart. Down the stretch though, it was a pair of key kills from Amblessed Okemgbo that sealed the win and two-set lead for the Bucs.

Set three proved to be not as close as the others as the Bucs convincingly closed the door on the Blues. Lauren Kremer's block put them ahead 7-3 and later an Okemgbo block extended the lead to 13-4. Pulver drilled a pair of kills in an attempt to bring the Blues back, but Whitworth pulled away and completed the sweep.

Whitman returns to the court this Friday, Oct. 25 against Linfield. First serve at the Sherwood Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
