Women's Volleyball Takes Down Linfield

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Bella Vickers delivered 11 kills to go along with a team-high 12 digs and the Whitman College women's volleyball team took down Linfield in four sets in Northwest Conference action on Friday night at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20.

Araeya Watanabe did the work for Linfield, posting match highs of 15 kills and 15 digs.

The Blues won the opening set handily. Linfield (5-14, 2-11 NWC) led by a point early but Whitman (5-14, 4-8 NWC) then reeled off six unanswered. Arina Gushchina and Quinn Pulver spearheaded the run with three and two kills, respectively, to put their team up 13-8. Back-to-back aces from Courtney Cline coupled with another Gushchina kill extended the lead to eight points and the Blues held on to strike first.

Whitman again held a sizable lead in its set-two win, but the Wildcats made it interesting down the stretch. A host of Blues on both sides of the net helped their team build a 17-11 lead, the latest effort on a kill from Samantha Miller. Linfield then mounted a rally that would end up tying the set. Nora Myre posted a kill then delivered an ace to whittle the lead to 21-20. The teams traded points down the stretch before a service error gave Whitman its first set point which led to a Navi Islam-Zwart kill and a two-set lead.

Linfield held off the Blues to win set three, but that proved to be just a hiccup as Whitman pulled away late in the fourth set to nail down the win. The Blues got out to an early lead but the Wildcats continued to remain in striking distance. Camryn Hirst's kill cut the lead to two points, but Vickers answered back with a kill of her own. Later, and with a four-point lead, the Blues block party arrived. Cline, Pulver and Lola Folk all got in on blocks in three successive points as Whitman pulled away for the win.

Whitman plays its final road matches of the season next weekend when it visits Willamette and Lewis & Clark.
