Women's Volleyball Falls To Willamette In Four Sets

SALEM, Ore. - Quinn Pulver delivered a match-high 13 kills, Haylee Pruse added 20 assists and 18 digs, but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College women's volleyball team lost in four sets to Willamette in Northwest Conference action on Friday night. Set scores were 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-23.

Arina Gushchina chipped in eight kills and 18 digs for the Blues who, along with the Bearcats, hit below the Mendoza line at .146. Jamie Bartok posted a team-high 24 digs and Courtney Cline added nine kills.

For Willamette, Olivia Cadien and Caroline Jameson shared match-high honors with 13 kills and Dream Takemoto posted a match-high 29 digs.

The result could have been an auspicious one for the Blues who struck first with an opening-set win. Pulver drilled a pair of kills as part of a run of five answered points that put Whitman up 10-6. The Bearcats closed the gap on multiple occasions but Pulver caught fire down the stretch. She unleashed a personal 4-0 run that kept Willamette at bay and nailed down the win.

Willamette had its way with the Blues in set two, but a late Whitman rally in set three nearly reversed the tide. After trailing early, the Blues played catch up all set and found themselves down late at 22-16. Ignited by Navi Islam-Zwart's kill, Whitman ran off five unanswered points to whittle the lead to a single point but were unable to come all the way back.

The clinching set for the Bearcats could also have gone Whitman's way. The Blues again trailed early, but found themselves knotted at 18-18. Katey Cramer then bookended a 4-0 run for Willamette, but the Blues responded with a solo block and a kill from Cline to cut the lead to two points. That was as close as they got, however, as Willamette held on for the win.

Whitman plays its road finale on Saturday night at Lewis & Clark. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
