Women's Volleyball Tops Lewis & Clark In Four Sets

PORTLAND, Ore. - Quinn Pulver and Arina Gushchina both delivered a team-high eight kills, Haylee Pruse added 20 assists and the Whitman College women's volleyball team took down Lewis & Clark in four sets in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night at the Pamplin Sports Center. Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19.

The offensive stats didn't tell the tale for the Blues as the defense stepped up to make the match's biggest impact. Bella Vickers posted a match-high 19 digs with Gushchina adding 16 more. Both Pulver and Navi Islam-Zwart added two blocks.

The opening set saw the Blues rally from an early deficit and compete in a dogfight the rest of the way. Islam-Zwart's kill highlighted a 4-0 Blues run that put them up by a point, but the Pioneers responded and took a 16-14 lead after kills from Annika Traxler and Isabel Melean-Williams. The two teams seemingly traded points down the stretch but late kills from Vickers and Gushchina sealed the win.

Set two was also competitive with the Pioneers holding a two-point lead midway through the set. The Blues took advantage of a handful of LC miscues and reversed the tide and took a 17-15 lead. The Pios responded and eyed a victory after going up 21-18, but the Blues grabbed complete control down the stretch. Gushchina's kill and back-to-back Pruse aces highlighted a 7-0 set-closing run to put the Blues up by two sets.

After a set three hiccup, Whitman closed the door with a solid win in a clinching set four win. The Blues hit at a .278 clip in the set and led by as many as eight points before cruising to the win.

The Blues now return home for their final weekend of play and will host Pacific Lutheran on Friday and Puget Sound on Saturday for Senior Night.
