Women's Volleyball Suffers Straight-Set Loss To PLU

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's volleyball team battled with one of the Northwest Conference's elite but came up short, falling in three sets to Pacific Lutheran in NWC action on Friday night at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 21-12. 25-21, 25-15.

Arina Gushchina delivered a match-high nine kills to go along with eight digs, and Jamie Bartok added 18 digs, also a match-high.

For PLU, Julissa Persteiner shared match-high honors with Gushchina also with nine kills. Makenna Jackson chipped in a team-best 15 digs.

Despite holding an early two-point lead in the opening set, the Blues (6-16, 5-10 NWC) fell mightily. Gushchina kills put her team up two points early and later evened the set at 10-10. The Lutes (18-6, 13-2 NWC) then took command and went on a 15-2 set-closing run.

Set two was a different story but, nevertheless, yielded the same result. Whitman came out of the gates on fire, going up 8-2 after a pair of kills from Quinn Pulver and two more from Gushchina and Lola Folk. PLU rallied and went on an 11-2 run to go up by three points midway through the set. The Lutes led by four points heading to the late stages of the set but the Blues had their own rally in them. After getting in on a block, Navi Islam-Zwart drilled back-to-back kills to even the score at 21-21. The Lutes had the last say, however, and closed out the set on back-to-back kills from Noe Feliciano and a clincher from Alexis Eggert.

The Lutes jumped on the Blues early in set three but Whitman never let the set completely slip away. They fell behind by seven midway through the set but chipped away at the lead. Folk's kill and Ivy Hicks' service ace gave Whitman some momentum and made it a five-point game heading to the final stages of the set. PLU stemmed the tide though and pulled away for the win and the match sweep.

Whitman closes out the season on Saturday against Puget Sound at 6:00 p.m. Prior to the match, the Blues will host Senior Night and honor Jackie Zapanta, Samantha Miller, Ivy Hicks and Quinn Pulver for their years of service to Whitman volleyball.
