Hunt's Late Goal Lifts Whitman Past George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. - Virginia Hunt's goal in the 83rd minute broke a scoreless stalemate and lifted the Whitman College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at George Fox in Northwest Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Said head coach Michelle Voiland on her team's performance, "What a great win! The team fought extremely hard, showing incredible grit, determination and patience. It was a very physical match and the players were more than up for the challenge. The composure on the ball today around the field was excellent and the goal was outstanding!"

Both teams certainly had ample opportunities to score with Whitman having the lionshare of those chances in recording 24 shots on the afternoon. Emily Robey was in goal for all of them and nearly left the game with a clean sheet but gave up the game winner to Hunt minutes away from full time.

Leah Barnes won the ball in the Whitman's defensive half and played a long ball to Baily Bell who had made a vertical run toward the penalty area. Bell was able to beat two defenders to the service and possess the ball inside the penalty box. She then found a streaking Hunt just inside the top of the box who one-timed her shot into the back of the net.

Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky and Seanee Still each played one half in goal for the Blues, each recorded four saves in the combined shutout. Romey posted 11 saves for George Fox.

Whitman will look to carry its momentum into Sunday's game at Pacific. Kickoff is set for 2:45 p.m.
