Women's Volleyball Sweeps Pios For Second Straight Win

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Arina Gushchina drilled a team-high 10 kills, Jackie Zapanta posted a match-best 12 digs and the Whitman College women's volleyball team won its second straight with a 25-17, 25-17, 28-26 sweep of Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference action on Friday night at the Sherwood Center.

Annika Traxler led all hitters, posting 11 kills for Lewis & Clark who nearly pushed the match to a fourth set. Bethany Ballesteros added a match-high 12 digs.

The opening set was tight for most of the way with both teams holding slim leads. Back-to-back Navi Islam-Zwart kills and a service ace from Haylee Pruse put the Blues up 11-10. The Pioneers (0-12, 0-5 NWC) then rallied to tie the score after consecutive Ruby Kuerschner aces. Whitman (3-9, 2-3 NWC) led by a whisker until Quinn Pulver's kill ignited a 9-2 run to close the set. Courtney Cline had a block and kill in the rally with Gushchina adding two kills, the second at set point to clinch the win.

The momentum continued into set two as Whitman's runaway train scored the first eight points of the frame. Gushchina had two kills in the run which was halted only by a Traxler kill. Traxler later heated up and drilled three straight kills to slice the early eight-point lead in half at 13-9. The Pios kept in striking distance, but the mountain proved to be too tough to climb as two straight Bella Vickers kills helped the Blues pull away for the win and the two-set lead.

Sweeping the Pios would be no small task as Whitman trailed most of the set before rallying for the win. Lewis & Clark led most of the way and held a 20-15 lead after an Emily Strand kill. The Blues later ran off five unanswered and held two match points at 24-22. The Pios staved off both of them and even had one of their own, but back-to-back kills from Sophie Broesamle put the hammer on the set to complete the sweep.

The Blues are back at it on Saturday against Willamette. First serve at the Sherwood Center is set for 6:00 p.m.
