Women's Volleyball Upended In Five Sets To Willamette

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Arina Gushchina had a monster game with match and career highs of 18 kills and 19 digs, but it wasn't enough as Willamette twice rallied from a set down to top the Whitman College women's volleyball team in five sets in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 14-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-10, 15-7.

Quinn Pulver added 11 kills, Jamie Bartok posted 17 digs and Haylee Pruse chipped in 23 assists.

For the Bearcats, Olivia Cadien recorded a team-high 14 kills and Dream Takemoto shared match-high honors with 19 digs.

The Blues got off to a hot start and built a three-point lead on the heels of kills from Gushchina, Navi Islam-Zwart and Sophie Broesamle. Gushchina later drilled a kill to ignite an 8-1 run to put the Blues up 23-13. Islam-Zwart sealed the opening set win after a kill of her own and a block assist for the clinching point.

Willamette responded with a set two win but the Blues pulled back in front after a solid set three victory. After early runs by both teams, Gushchina took over the set. She drilled three consecutive kills to give Whitman an 11-5 lead. Willamette hung around briefly but the Blues would soon blow the roof off. Gushchina delivered back-to-back kills as part of a 5-1 run and Whitman pulled away.

Looking to deliver a knockout blow, it was anything but for the Blues in set four. Willamette jumped all over them early and rode a wave of momentum into the fifth and deciding set. The Bearcats scored four of the set's first five points but the Blues rallied and tied the score with a Gushchina kill. The Bearcats took control from there and ran off five unanswered points to cruise to the win and clinch the match.

The Blues are back on the road next weekend with matches at Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.
