Women's Volleyball Swept At Puget Sound

TACOMA, Wash. - Arina Gushchina recorded a team-high 10 kills, Jamie Bartok added a match-best 14 digs but it couldn't stop the Whitman College women's volleyball team from suffering a straight set loss to Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action on Friday night. Set scores were 25-11, 25-22, 25-20.

Haylee Pruse added a team-high 15 assists for the Blues (3-11, 2-5 NWC) who, after absorbing a haymaker in set one, recovered nicely to engage in a competitive next two sets.

Mackenzie Leith put her stamp on the game for the Loggers, posting 11 kills while adding two blocks and eight digs.

An early 7-0 UPS run spelled doom for the Blues in the opening set which led to the loss and a one-set lead for the Loggers in the match. Whitman recovered nicely, however, and jumped on top of UPS early in set two. Gushchina drilled three kills and got in on a block as part of an 8-2 run to start set two. Three straight service aces bolted the Loggers back into the set though, but the Blues continued to lead heading to the stretch. A pair of late kills from Samantha Miller put the Blues up by three points, but UPS closed on a 6-0 run to take a two-set lead.

The Loggers delivered what could have been a knockout blow early in set three. Leith and Maddie Badger both had three kills as part of an 11-3 run to start the set, but the Blues never folded and hung around until the very end.

Back-to-back kills from Taryn Fleharty stemmed the tide, but the Loggers again ran off a string of points and led 20-10. Courtney Cline kickstarted a Whitman rally and won seven straight points off her serve. She also got in on a pair of blocks as Whitman reeled off eight straight points to whittle the lead to only two points. Quinn Pulver later kept the deficit at two with a kill, but UPS closed the set and the match on a 5-1 run.

Whitman stays in Tacoma one more night to take on Pacific Lutheran. Saturday's first serve against the Lutes is set for 6:00 p.m.
