Martin Equals Career High, Blues Roll Past SUNY Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. - Carly Martin is fresh off a weekend that saw her named the Chuck Resler Tournament Most Valuable Player and the Northwest Conference Women's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week. The early season run continued as she equaled a career high with 24 points to lead the Whitman College women's basketball team to a 75-51 Veterans Day win over SUNY Geneseo on Monday at Carl Schrader Gymnasium.

Martin was efficient from the floor in scoring her game-high total, shooting 10-14 from the floor and 4-7 in three pointers. Linsdsey Drango stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Holly Morgan chipped in 11 points and seven boards off the Whitman (3-0) bench.

Audrey Hintz led SUNY Geneseo (0-1) with 11 points and Kristin Suydam added 10 points and five rebounds.

Whitman took complete control early and led by 15 points after the first quarter. The Blues went up by eight points after hitting five of their first seven shots including three pointers from Martin and Christiane Carlisle. Back-to-back buckets from Korin Baker contributed to what turned out to be a 9-0 run that lifted Whitman to a 25-10 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

The lead swelled to as many as 16 points in the second quarter, but the Knights rallied to cut the deficit to single digits by halftime. SUNY Geneseo whittled the lead to as little as five points on two occasions early in the second half, but the Blues regrouped and quickly pushed their advantage back up to double digits. Martin's three pointer capped a 9-2 run and returned the lead to 12 points with 4:40 to play. The Blues unleashed another 9-2 run late in the quarter which ended with a 17-point lead.

The lead ballooned to 20 points at the midway point of the fourth quarter and remained at that or higher the majority of the rest of the way.

After a perfect start to the season, the Blues return to Walla Walla and will play their home openers at the annual Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic. The tournament runs from Nov. 15-17 with Whitman playing East Texas Baptist University and the University of La Verne.
