Women's Basketball Blows Past ETBU

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Korin Baker delivered a monster performance with a season-high 26 points on 11-16 shooting to guide the Whitman College women's basketball to a 72-51 win over East Texas Baptist University in the team's second game of the Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic.

Carly Martin chipped in 13 points and Lindsey Drango added eighth points and seven rebounds for the Blues (4-0) who shot just south of 50% for the game. They were aided by a plus-14 rebound advantage which led to 22 second chance points.

Payton Hicks led the Tigers (3-1) with 12 points.

The Blues opened the game on an 8-0 run and didn't allow a field goal until 6:10 left in the quarter. Baker had the hot hand early, hitting a pair of jumpers and getting to the line for a pair of free throws as part of that early run. The Tigers quickly rallied to tie the game at 10-10, but Whitman regrouped and pushed the lead back up to six points. Kadia Ward had the last say of the quarter, drilling a three pointer to cut the Whitman lead to 16-13 by the end of the quarter.

Whitman took complete control of the game in the second quarter. Jayla Hall converted an and-one three point play for ETBU but the Blues then went on an 8-0 run capped by a Drango three pointer to put Whitman up 34-24 with 2:22 to play until the half. Natalie Lundberg's floating layup later put the Blues up 13 points at the break, their largest lead of the game to that point.

The Blues blew the roof off the game in the third quarter as the lead swelled to as many as 22 points. Holly Morgan and Baker hit back-to-back buckets to put their team up 18, then Drango hit a three pointer just before the end of the period to extend to a 57-35 lead heading to the fourth quarter, one that proved elementary.

The Blues close out the Classic on Sunday against La Verne. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 12:00 p.m.
