Men's Basketball Tips Off Season With 66-60 Win Over ETBU

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Isaiah Amato scored a team-high 16 points on 6-10 shooting, Ali Efe Isik stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists and the Whitman College men's basketball team opened the season with a 66-60 win over East Texas Baptist on Wednesday night at the Sherwood Center.

The Blues (1-0) struggled from beyond the arc but shot an overall solid 41% shooting from the floor and benefited from a plus-12 margin in points in the paint.

Jason Justice led the Tigers (0-3) with a game-high 17 points.

The Blues sprinted out of the gates, hitting their first five shots which included an Isaiah Amato three pointer to cap an 11-4 run to start the game. The run continued as Milos Sarenac nailed a three ball of his own to put Whitman up 18-5 with 13:37 to play in the half.

The Tigers then woke up from their early game slumber as Josh Davis got to the hoop for a bucket to ignite a 7-0 run. Alex Pape drained a three pointer to temporarily slow the momentum, but Nathan Fleming hit back-to-back buckets and Davis nailed a triple and, all of a sudden, the Whitman lead had been whittled to a single digit at 27-26 with 4:09 to play. Efe Isik took over down the stretch of the half, twice scoring at the hoop with the second resulting in an and one three-point play to put Whitman up 35-29 at the break.

It was a tight second half for sure, one that saw Justice put ETBU up for the first time with a three pointer just under five minutes into the half. Justice later extended the lead to four points on another three pointer, but Amato responded with an and one three-point play on the next possession.

The teams traded buckets until Whitman recaptured the lead on a Grant Hunt basket with 7:01 to play. The Blues clamped down defensively and reeled off 10 unanswered points to take a seven-point lead with 2:49 remaining. Justice's jumper with 32 seconds to play made it a two-point game, but Amato hit two free throws on the other end to all but ice the game.

The Blues continue a heavy opening week with they host North Central College on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
