Women's Basketball Tops EOU In Exhibition Action

LA GRANDE, Ore. - Korin Baker and Carly Martin shared game-high honors each with 12 points to lead the Whitman College women's basketball team to a 52-44 exhibition win at Eastern Oregon on Saturday afternoon.

The contest was an exhibition for both schools as each tinkered with their lineups and worked through expected kinks before getting their regular seasons underway. Baker nearly posted a double double with nine rebounds and Briana Andrade added 11 points and seven boards off the bench.

Raquel Fehringer led all Mountaineer scorers with 10 points and Kelsie Seigner added nine points and eight rebounds.

Neither team shot the ball well as Whitman was held below 30% shooting including 14% in three pointers.

Whitman trailed by a point after the opening quarter but retook the lead and started to create some distance between them and EOU in the second quarter. Baker opened the period with a jumper then converted an and one three-point play to give her team a 16-13 lead with 7:10 to play. Christiane Carlisle then began to heat up, nailing back-to-back triples to help the Blues to a four-point halftime lead.

Whitman continued to lead in the third quarter as Martin and Baker did the heavy lifting on the scoring front. Baskets by Andrade and Holly Morgan though inside of a minute to play extended the lead to six points as the Blues entered the fourth quarter still with the lead.

The Blues pulled away in the fourth, nearly extending to a double digit lead on several occasions. Martin's three ball with 6:35 to play put Whitman up by nine points, and a late Andrade bucket sealed the win for the Blues.

The Blues open the regular season next weekend when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. for the Chuck Resler Tournament.
