Women's Basketball Tips Off Season With Win Over Franklin & Marshall

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Whitman College women's basketball team tipped off the regular season on Friday morning and showcased an impressive defensive performance in a 63-48 win over Franklin & Marshall in the semifinals of the Chuck Resler Tournament hosted by the University of Rochester at Louis Alexandra Palestra.

The Blues now play the winner of FDU-Fordham and the host Yellowjackets in the championship game held on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

Carly Martin put up a game-high 12 points and Lindsay Drango chipped in 10 more to go along with five rebounds. Korin Baker posted six points, seven rebounds and a game-high four assists. The Blues held Franklin & Marshall to only 30% shooting which included a 17% in the second quarter where they established a double digit lead and set the tone for the rest of the game.

Kennedy Wilburn led the Diplomats with 12 points and Ally Trebelev added 10 points. Both grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Whitman came out firing as a pair of buckets from Martin and another from Natalie Lundberg put the Blues up 9-6 with 5:27 to play in the opening quarter. The offense then slowed for both teams who found themselves tied at 11-11 after the opening 10 minutes.

The Blues broke the game open in the second quarter after outscoring Franklin & Marshall by 10 points. Kickstarted by a pair of post buckets from Drango, Whitman saw contributions from a host of players including Christiane Carlsile and Jordan Leith who both hit three pointers in the quarter.

The momentum continued as the teams came out for the second half. After a Quinn Gilligan three pointer shaved the Diplomat deficit to eight points, the Blues ran off 10 unanswered points. Carlisle capped the run with a three pointer that put her team up 39-21 with 5:54 to play.
