Women's Tennis Opens Spring Play With Sweep of LC State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LEWISTON, Idaho - The Whitman College women's tennis team kicked off its spring season with a bang, sweeping a pair of matches at Lewis-Clark State College at the LCSC Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. Whitman (3-0) topped the Warriors 6-1 in the first match then capped the sweep with a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
 
MATCH ONE: Whitman 6 LC State 1
The Blues kicked off match one sweeping all double matches. Illina Jha and Jin Yu teamed up for a dominant 6-0 win at the two before Arianna Castellanos and Teleya Blunt edged the Warrior team of Heidi Moyo and Rayana Shah in a tiebreak, 7-6 (4), to clinch the doubles point.

Whitman won the first two singles matches to finish. Wells swept Carisa Liebenberg 6-4, 6-1 before Blunt cruised past Shah at the two, 6-1, 6-4. The match-clincher came at the three when Jha rallied from a set down to beat Perez 4-6, 7-5, 7-5

MATCH TWO: Whitman 4 LC State 3
The second match also saw the Blues claim the doubles point. Julia Longpre and Sascha Wells opened with a 6-2 win at the one before Jules Thompson and Piper Rylander secured the point with their win on the No. 3 court.

Singles play saw the Warriors even the match with a straight set win at the four. The next three finishes went in favor of the Blues who clinched the victory and doubleheader sweep. 

Castellanos swept April Buckingham at the one 6-4, 6-1 to give the lead back for the Blues. Thompson then swept Naiara Montero 6-4, 6-4 on the No. 3 court and Blunt edged Gwyn Hein in a modified tiebreaker 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 for the match-clincher.

The Blues return to action next weekend when they host Colorado College on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 4:00 p.m.
