Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - The No. 40 Whitman College women's tennis team faced a daunting task on the road, but came up short in an 8-1 loss at No. 15 Washington University in St. Louis on Friday at the Tao Tennis Center.
The Blues competed well but ultimately did not have enough to pull out the win. Doubles play went smoothly for the Bears who solidly won each. Amber Edmonds and Eliana Hanna defeated
Teleya Blunt and
Arianna Castellanos 8-2 at first doubles to assure the Bears of the lead heading to singles. Nina Moravek and Eleanor Archer topped
Jin Yu and
Ilina Jha 8-4 at the two; and Katherine Johnston and Emily Chiasson beat
Erica Mock and
Sascha Wells 8-2 on the No. 3 court.
The Bears made quick work of the Blues in singles play to clinch the win. Mock fell to Johnston 6-1, 6-1 with the match-clinching win coming on the No. 5 court as Chiasson topped Julia Longpre by the same score.
Blunt grabbed Whitman's lone victory on the afternoon. She topped Moravek in straight sets 7-6 (4), 7-5 on the No. 1 court to close the match.
The Blues retake the court on Saturday with a matchup against DePauw University at 1:00 p.m. PT.
