THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The No. 40 Whitman College women's tennis team dropped all three doubles matches but fought back and nearly pulled off the victory before coming up short in a 5-4 loss at Cal Lutheran on Thursday.
"I'm so proud of how we fought and competed," said head coach John Hein. "This is definitely a match that both shows our growth and how we can still improve."
After losses on the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts, Whitman had hoped to salvage one point heading to singles play. That was not to be, however, as Cal Lu's Garcia and Jurys edged Ilina Jha and Sascha Wells 8-7 (4) for the doubles sweep.
Whitman turned the tide in singles with each of its wins coming via sweeps. Jha topped Ford at the three 6-0, 6-2 and Arianna Castellanos beat Ahmadi on the No. 4 court 6-1, 6-2 for the most dominant of the wins.
The match came down to fifth singles with Wells pitted against Limpias. Wells battled from a set down but fell 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
The Blues will enjoy a day off on their current road trip and return to action at Caltech on Saturday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m.
