Blunt Tops Former National Champ, No. 40 Blues Fall To No. 9 Williams

3/18/2024 3:12:00 PM

Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 40 Whitman College women's tennis team concluded its non-conference trip in Southern California against yet another top caliber opponent, but came up short in an 8-1 loss to No. 9 Williams College.

The story of the match for the Blues (9-7), however, was Teleya Blunt's singles win over former national champion Erica Eckstrand. She did so in convincing fashion with a 6-3, 7-5 victory on the No. 1 court.

Said coach John Hein of his team, "this was another excellent match for us, we really battled against a top 10 team and Teleya's win over an NCAA singles champion was an amazing way to cap off a terrific trip."

After a sweep by the Ephs in doubles play, Williams clinched the match early with straight-set wins on the No. 4 and No. 6 courts. Arianna Castellanos fell 6-0, 6-0 to Mia Thomann at the four, and Julia Longpre dropped a 6-2, 6-2 result to Margaux Molyneux.

Whitman will have nearly two weeks off before resuming play at Pacific in a return to Northwest Conference action on Saturday, March 30 at 11:00 p.m.
