Game Recap: Baseball |

Petersen, Hernandez, Otte Pace Baseball To Sweep of George Fox

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Halen Otte delivered a walk-off win in game one, Julien Hernandez was dominant on the mound in the nightcap and the Whitman College baseball team delivered a home-opening doubleheader sweep of George Fox in Northwest Conference play on Saturday at Borleske Stadium.

Whitman 6 George Fox 5 (Game 1)
Otte (1 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) was the hero in Whitman's game one victory. After Russell Petersen struck out the side in the ninth inning of a tie game, the Blues came to bat with a chance for a victory in the bottom of the inning. Otte, with the bases empty and no runners on, ripped a Singleton (1-1) pitch over the left centerfield fence for a walk-off homerun.

Jack Hostetler pitched a serviceable five innings in his start for the Blues (3-3), allowing four runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Petersen (2-0) came in out of the bullpen to start the sixth and delivered four strong innings for the win. He allowed only one run on two hits while striking out four hitters, three coming in the Bruins' half of the ninth.

Brandon Ting had a massive game for the Blues who never led until their final at bat. Ting had three hits, none bigger than his two-run triple to tie the game in the fourth inning. Beck Maguire recorded one hit and two runs, and Nate Korahais had a hit and a run scored.

Meffert and Balingit provided much of the offense for the Bruins. Meffert posted two hits and scored a run with Balingit (1 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) homering in the fifth to break a 4-4 tie.

Whitman 17 George Fox 4 (Game 2)
Hernandez picked up the win in game two, but the story was Whitman's offensive explosion. Mateus Conaway (2 H, 3 R, 3 RBI) led the way, with his big hit a bases clearing double as part of Whitman's six-run third inning. Conaway scored one batter later when Ting went yard to put the Blues up 11-2 after three innings.

Maguire registered two hits, three runs and one RBI, and Nick Teng chipped in three hits, one run and one RBI.

Hernandez (1-1) pitched into the seventh inning in picking up the win. He tossed six and two-thirds innings while giving up three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

The Bruins threw five pitchers with none having much success against Whitman hitting. Starter Rady (0-1) was tagged with the loss, pitching two and one-third innings and giving up seven runs on seven hits.

Whitman and George Fox conclude their NWC series on Sunday with a single game set for 12:00 p.m.
