WALLA WALLA, Wash. -
Nate Korahais delivered three hits including a run-scoring triple in the second inning, but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College baseball team couldn't complete a sweep of Pacific in a 4-2 loss to the Boxers in Northwest Conference action on Sunday at Borleske Field.
Nick Teng added two hits and a run scored for the Blues (11-7, 6-3 NWC) who, even with today's loss, have won each NWC series this season.
Mateus Conaway (2-3) earned the start and struggled early, but pitched into the seventh inning before being lifted for Cole Kreber with two outs. In being tagged with the loss, Conaway finished with a final line of four runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in six and two-thirds innings.
Shane Melrose earned the win for the Boxers after giving up two runs on six hits in six complete innings of work. Davis Koester tossed a scoreless two and two-thirds innings and picked up the save.
Pacific got ahead early with three runs over the first two innings. Benjamin Lewis (2 H, 2 RBI) drove home a run in the first before Matt Gibbs (2 H, 1 R) later scored after Conaway issued a bases-loaded walk.
The Blues scored both of their runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to one run. Korahais drove home Brandon Ting with his triple with Teng's base knock scoring Korahais.
Whitman was unable to scratch across another run as Pacific held on for the win.
The Blues return to action next weekend at Pacific Lutheran. The Blues and Lutes kick off their three-game NWC series with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 30 at 12:00 p.m.
