Blues Split Doubleheader At Linfield

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - The Whitman College and Linfield University baseball teams played to two exciting finishes in both games of a Northwest Conference doubleheader that saw the Blues win the opener 9-8 and the Wildcats take the nightcap 6-5.

Whitman 9 Linfield 8
The opener saw Beck Maguire (3 H, 2 R, 2 RBI) deliver a two-run homer in the top of the ninth and Wyatt Adams shut the door with a perfect bottom of the ninth to pick up the save for the Blues.

Jack Bickerton (2 H, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Halen Otte (3 H, 2 R, 2 RBI) also homered for the Blues who erased a deficit on three occasions, the final one when they took the lead for good in the ninth. Otte's homer was his third of the young season.

Jake Hoskins and Tyler Marr led the Wildcats. Each posted two hits and two RBI with Hoskins adding one run scored.

On the bump, Billy Wall (1-0) picked up the win in two innings of relief work, with Gavin Ludlow (0-2) tagged with the loss after surrendering the Maguire homerun in the ninth inning.

Whitman struck first with Bickerton's two-run homer in the third, but the Wildcats responded with four runs in the bottom of the third. The Blues trailed by two runs in the fifth before Brandon Ting's two-out, two-run base knock tied the game.

Linfield regained the lead one inning later on a pair of RBI hits but Otte squared matters after ripping a two-run homer over the left centerfield wall to make it a 7-7 game through seven and one-half innings. Marr's base hit one-half inning later put Linfield back out in front, but Maguire went yard in the ninth and Adams retired the side in order to lift Whitman to the win.

The nightcap saw the Blues rally with three runs in the ninth inning only to see a walk off win for the Wildcats one half inning later.

Whitman entered its half of the ninth trailing by three runs. Maguire opened the inning with a base hit before Runyan's double put runners on second and third with no one out. Then, after Ting was hit by a pitch from reliever Nick Alder, Conaway drove home a run with a base hit to make it a 5-3 score. Otte then continued his big start to the season and tied the game with a two-run base hit.

Linfield won the game in the bottom of the ninth with a walk off base hit. Adams, looking for his second save of the doubleheader, gave up back-to-back hits, the second to Hunter Klingerhoffer with the bases loaded to win the game.

Julien Hernandez did not factor in the decision but tossed a solid five complete innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out eight Wildcats. Brian Mannion was the pitcher of record for Linfield after retiring two batters in the Whitman ninth.

Maguire had another solid performance with two hits and a run scored, and Conaway reached base five times after recording two hits and drawing three walks.

The Blues and Wildcats conclude their series on Saturday with a single game set for 12:00 p.m.
