Game Recap: Baseball |

Mieszkowski-Lapping, Bickerton Homer; Baseball Tops Lewis & Clark On Senior Day

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team could not have picked a better time to sweep its first Northwest Conference series. Jack Bickerton's three-run homer erased an early deficit as the Blues took one step closer to a conference title, taking all three games against Lewis & Clark with a 5-3 Senior Day victory on Sunday at Borleske Stadium.

Prior to the game the Blues honored seniors Billy Wall, Wyatt Adams, Garrett Runyan, Mateus Conaway, Julien Hernandez, Back Maguire, Joaquin Hines and student manager Annalie Reed for their contributions to Whitman baseball.

The win puts Whitman (24-13, 15-6 NWC) one win away from clinching the regular season title outright and hosting its first-ever postseason tournament. The Blues will need to get it at second-place Willamette as the two teams will both vye for a conference title when they open up a three-game series next weekend to close the regular season.

The win was not without its early challenges as the Pioneers put three runs on the board in the first inning. Potter (1 H, 2 RBI) and Cavagnaro (2 H, 1 RBI) both delivered run-scoring hits to put their team up 3-0.

The Blues finally got on the board in the fourth inning as Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping hit a solo homerun. One inning later, Bickerton (2 H, 1 R, 3 RBI) clubbed his three-run shot to give Whitman a lead it would not relinquish.

After his rough first inning, Mateus Conaway (5-4) settled in and pitched a beauty. He pitched seven straight scoreless innings and struck out nine batters in eight complete innings. Wall came on to pitch a scoreless ninth for the save.

Ritter was tagged with the loss for the Pios, allowing one earned run in three innings of relief work.

The series with the Bearcats gets underway with a noon doubleheader on Saturday, May 4.
