4/7/2024 11:50:00 PM

Box Score WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In a clash of the league's elite, the Whitman College women's tennis team proved it was a step above the rest, taking down previously undefeated George Fox 8-1 on Sunday to clinch a share of the Northwest Conference regular season title.

The title was the second in as many years for the Blues who stand as the lone unbeaten team in the conference and, more importantly, hold the tiebreaker against every league team in the bid to host the Northwest Conference Tournament later this month.

The Blues (13-7, 6-0 NWC) set the tone for the dominant win after a clean sweep in doubles play. Grace Carter and Jin Yu got things going with a victory on the No. 2 court, then the first doubles team of Teleya Blunt and Arianna Castellanos took down the Bruin pair of Kalli Wiker and Riley Bobkiewicz, 8-5.

Already in control, the Blues clinched the victory with wins on the No. 1 and No. 6 singles courts. Blunt swept Wiker at the one, 6-0, 6-2, then Sascha Wells took down Sophie Denham 6-0, 6-2 to seal the win.

Blunt, Yu, Castellanos and Julia Longpre all collected wins after the result had been decided.

The Blues close out the conference season on Saturday, April 13 against Puget Sound. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
