Women's Volleyball Falls To Clarkson To Close Day One of Whit Classic

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Sophie Broesamle again led the charge, putting up eight kills and 10 digs but it came in another loss, this time a sweep at the hands of Clarkson University to close out day one of the Whit Classic on Friday at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 25-12, 25-14, 25-23.

Marin Hangliter and Abigail Spector led the Golden Knights (1-1) with match highs of 10 kills and 17 digs, respectively. Jackie Zapanta posted a team-high 12 digs for the Blues (0-2).

The Blues had a tough go of it to start the match as Clarkson scored six of the match's first seven points. The Blues did finally get into system as kills from Jamie Bartok, Nadia Shepherd and Lola Folk helped cut the lead to 10-7. The Knights then squashed any momentum the Blues gained at the point, running off eight unanswered points to win going away.

Clarkson won set two in similar fashion with the Blues trailing early and forced to play catchup. Three straight Knight kills put them up 10-2 but the Blues finally found something and fought back into the set. Kills from Quinn Pulver and Broesamle cut the lead to four then, after a Clarkson timeout, Navi Islam-Zwart drilled another kill to make it a 10-3 score. Clarkson took full control from there, however, dropping the hammer with a 12-4 set-closing run.

Whitman nearly pushed the match to a fourth set but came up just shy in the end. Clarkson led 16-11 and looked prime to close out the match, but the Blues rallied with five unanswered points to tie the set. Clarkson steadied the tide and held a late three-point lead, but again Whitman rallied as Islam-Zwart's kill ignited a 4-0 run which gave the Blues a 22-21 lead.

The two teams traded points down the stretch but it were the Golden Knights who made good on their match point to complete the sweep.

The Blues close out the Classic on Sunday with matches against Pacific Lutheran and UC Santa Cruz.
