Women's Volleyball Thrills In Victory Over PLU

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In what will hopefully be a sign of things to come, the Whitman College women's volleyball team notched its first win of the season, topping Pacific Lutheran in four sets on Saturday at the Whit Classic. Set scores were 25-22, 19-25, 26-24, 25-21 and the match was played as a non-conference contest between Northwest Conference teams.

Sophie Broesamle led all hitters with 14 kills and Jamie Bartok posted a team-best 24 digs. Julisa Pernsteiner led the Lutes with 12 kills and Makenna Jackson registered a match-high 25 digs.

Early dominance led to an impressive Whitman win to open the match. The set was seemingly over before it started as the Blues opened the frame winning 12 of the first 14 points. Broesamle drilled three kills in the early burst with Navi Islam-Zwart adding two more. Late in the set, Samantha Miller registered a kill and Islam-Zwart added another as Whitman held on for the opening set win.

The second set featured a more competitive battle with the Lutes coming out on top to even the match. Whitman did hold a slim lead heading to the midpoint of the set, but five consecutive Lute points gave them the momentum and a 13-10 lead. PLU extended the lead to six points but Whitman stopped the bleeding with a Samantha Miller kill and a Melia Ferraro ace. The Lutes righted the ship, however, and pulled away for the win.

Whitman rebounded swimmingly to recapture the momentum and the lead in the match. The Blues did trail early, but back-to-back kills from Islam-Zwart and two more from Broesamle helped tie the set at 15-15. The set was tight from there. Shaela Allen-Greggs led the Lutes in that final stretch, posting three kills to help bring her team within one point, but the Blues held on to go back up in the match.

The Blues needed to hold on once again in set four, but never folded in the face of adversity to complete the four-set win. Whitman scored the set's first five points then pushed the lead to 20-8 and looked prime to cruise to the win. The Lutes ran off six unanswered points and eventually whittled the lead to a mere three points. Broesamle came alive in the final moments, drilling a pair of kills to help seal the big win.

The Blues retake the court tonight against Clarkson in the final match of the Whit Classic.
