Women's Volleyball Closes Classic With Loss To UCSC

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Sophie Broesamle posted eight kills and six digs, Jack Zapanta added a match-high 22 digs but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to UC Santa Cruz in the final match of the Whit Classic on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 25-15, 25-19, 25-18.

The opening set saw UCSC take control following Zapanta's kill which leveled the early score at 4-4. Heidi Collins posted a kill and got in a block as the Slugs went on an 8-1 run to take a 12-5 lead. The run continued as the lead swelled to double digits, this time resulting from the defense of Kelly Ann Green who got in on a pair of blocks to push the lead to 17-6 and all but seal the set one win.

Set two saw the Blues hold the lead for a good portion. After trailing by three points early, Whitman ran off five unanswered points highlighted by a block and a kill from Navi Islam-Zwart as the Blues took a 13-11 lead. Broesamle delivered a pair of kills to help Whitman stay in front at 17-15 but the Slugs took control and dominated the rest of the set.

Whitman held a slim lead early in what proved to be the final set, but fell behind the eight ball quickly. UCSC scored five unanswered points to take control and pulled away to complete the sweep.

Next up for the Blues is a visit to Texas for the Southwestern Fall Invitational.
