Women's Volleyball Falls To UT Dallas In Straight Sets

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Whitman College women's volleyball team had hoped to start its road trip on a winning note, but came short in a straight-set loss to UT Dallas in the team's opening match of the SU Fall Invitational on Friday at the Corbin J. Robertson Center. Set scores were 25-21, 25-12, 25-19.

Arina Gushchina and Jamie Bartok posted team highs of seven kills and six digs, respectively, for the Blues who couldn't find their way past the UTD block and hit only .085 for the match.

Alina Strickler posted a match-high 11 kills for the Comets.

The opening set saw the Blues lead early, but UTD respond with a run of seven unanswered points to pull ahead 13-7. The run continued as the Comets extended their lead to nine points, but Whitman (1-4) responded with a late run. A pair of kills by Sophie Broesamle sandwiched around a trio of Jackie Zapanta aces helped cut the deficit to five points. Back-to-back Gushchina kills made it a three-point game, but UTD closed out the set.

Set two saw a tight match until midway through the frame. After a Samantha Miller kill evened the score at 10-10, the Comets went on a 15-2 set-closing run to take a commanding two-set lead. The third and, what proved to be, final set saw the Blues respond valiantly, but also a late Comet run to complete the sweep.

Whitman plays its second and final match of the day when it squares off against Concordia Texas this afternoon.
