Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Suffers Sweep To Concordia

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Arina Gushchina again led the attack with a team-high 13 kills, Sophie Broesamle posted 10 kills and eight digs for a near double double, but the effort again came with a loss as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Concordia-Texas on Friday night. Set scores were 25-123-, 25-23, 25-19.

Courtney Cline and Jackie Zapanta added match-highs of five blocks and 20 digs, respectively, which limited the Tornados to only a .195 attack percentage.

Rayna Pack led the Tornados with a match-high 15 kills and Faith Zock added a double double with 12 kills and 11 digs.

Sets one and two were tight but the Blues (1-5) came up on the short end of the stick in both. The opening set came down to the wire despite Concordia unleashing an 8-1 run and holding a 17-8 lead. The Tornados then got a taste of their own medicine as the Blues responded with their own 8-1 run spearheaded by a pair of kills from Broesamle and a pair of blocks from Nadia Shepherd. Later, the Blues found themselves down two but back-to-back kills from Gushchina and another from Broesamle even the game at 23-23. Zoch put an end to the Whitman threat however, drilling a pair of kills to seal the set one win.

Set two saw control by Concordia early, but a run of six unanswered mid-set points by the Blues reversed that tide. Lilli Thompson spearheaded the run with a pair of kills that put Whitman up 20-16. Down the stretch, Gushchina posted three kills but she would be all the offense the Blues offered as the Tornadoes rallied to take a two-set lead.

The third set saw both teams play to an even 12-12 score, but Concordia turn it on and pull away for the win and match sweep.

The Blues close out the trip and the SU Fall Invitational with a Saturday match against host Southwestern. First serve is set for 10:15 a.m. PT.
