Women's Volleyball Upended In Season Opener

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Sophie Broesamleled the Blues with match-highs of eight kills and eight digs but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College women's volleyball team kicked off the season with a straight set loss to Redlands in the opening match of the Whit Classic on Friday at the Sherwood Center.

Kaegan Kerry posted a double double for Redlands (1-0) with 10 kills and 10 digs, and Lali Makaiwi logged a match-high 14 digs.

Navi Islam-Zwart kept the Blues (0-1) going early in set one, registering a kill and a block and keeping the set even at 6-6. The Bulldogs began rolling from there and won five of the next six points to take command of the set. Broesamle and Quinn Pulver did keep the Blues within striking distance though. Broesamle's kill whittled the lead to five and Pulver drilled two late kills to again cut the lead to five, but Redlands pulled away late for the one-set lead.

The Bulldogs delivered another solid win to take a two-set lead. Early kills from Emma Murphy and a block and kill from Paige Sugg put the Bulldogs up 11-2 and gave them a stranglehold on the set. Kills from Samantha Miller and Lilli Thompson kept the deficit at single digits, but Redlands finished off the set late.

Whitman nearly pushed the match to a fourth set with a nail biting finish to the frame. Redlands looked prime to pull away midway through the set but the Blues had other ideas. Wherry's kill put the Bulldogs up five but five unanswered points from the Blues bookended by Broesamle kills evened the score at 16-16. Whitman took a one-point lead twice down the stretch, but it would be the Bulldogs who capitalized on the first match point to complete the sweep.

The Blues return for the second and final match of the day this evening when they face Clarkson to close out day one of the Classic. First serve is set for 8:00 p.m.
