Standout Performances Highlight Day 1 of ITA's

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Whitman College women's tennis team delivered an excellent showing on Day 1 of the ITA Fall Northwest Championship on Friday which saw four doubles teams and six singles participants advance to the A doubles main draw quarterfinals and A singles round of 16.

Saturday's doubles action will begin with a Whitman pair playing in each quarterfinal matches. All four teams cruised, led by the tournament's top seed of Arianna Castellanos and Telaya Blunt. Jin Yu teamed up with Whitman first year Nana Vang for the most dominant performance as the No. 4 seed, losing only a single game en route to advancing to their quarterfinal match.

All six singles winners did so in straight sets. Blunt and Yu entered as the field's No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively, and did not disappoint. Blunt topped Kaitlyn Canubida of Linfield 6-0, 6-3, and Yu dispatched UPS's Kaylee Yamada 6-1, 6-0.

In addition, a handful of Whitman players competed in the B singles draw led by top seeded Jules Thompson who advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal round after a first-round bye and a straight-set win in the second round.

Day 2 of the tournament begins on Saturday beginning with doubles action starting at 9:00 a.m.
