Women's Volleyball Tops Linfield In NWC Thriller

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - In search of its first Northwest Conference win, the Whitman College women's volleyball team found it on Saturday at Linfield, topping the Wildcats in a five-set thriller at Ted Wilson Gymnasium. Sets scores were 23-25, 25-22, 12-25, 25-20, 15-12.

Whitman saw contributions from a host of players. Arina Guschina posted 10 kills and 18 digs to go along with three aces and three blocks. Haylee Pruse added a double double of her own with 12 assists and 14 digs and Quinn Pulver chipped in 10 kills.

Marina Erosa impressed on both sides of the net for the Wildcats. She recorded 11 kills and posted a match-high 22 digs.

The opening two sets featured some stiff competition as Linfield took the opening frame and Whitman squared matters with a victory in set two.

The Blues fell mightily in set three but responded nicely to push the match to a fifth and deciding set. Whitman narrowly led until a quick 4-0 run put some distance in between. Courtney Cline delivered a kill then got in on a block to make it a 19-14 score and the Blues held on to send the match to a deciding set five.

Whitman scored four of the first five points in the final set and never gave up the lead.

The Blues are next in action on Friday, Oct. 5 when they host Lewis & Clark at 7:00 p.m.
