Men's Basketball Tops PLU In NWC Action

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Grant Hunt and Isaiah Amato both scored a game-high 15 points to lead five players in double figures and the Whitman College men's basketball team remained perfect in Northwest Conference play with an 84-64 win over Pacific Lutheran on Saturday at the Sherwood Center.

Ali Efe Isik was one rebound shy of a double double (9 pts, 10 reb) for the Blues (4-7, 2-0 NWC) who shot an impressive 53% in three pointers. The 20-point win was also due in part to 23 points of 16 Lute turnovers and a plus-28 scoring advantage in the paint.

Julian Brown led the Lutes with 13 points and Dom Perasso added nine points and a team-best six rebounds off the bench.

The first half saw the Blues lead by as many as seven points but the Lutes rally to take a one-point lead into the break. Whitman built its lead after Alex Pape started to heat up from the floor. He nailed back-to-back three pointers before Jacob Fotu scored at the rim to put their team up 18-12 with 12:43 to play.

The Blues kept up the pressure as Djordje Lazarevic nailed a three pointer for a 23-16 lead heading to the midpoint of the half. PLU didn't let the game slip away however and chipped away at the lead with hot shooting beyond the arc. Perasso hit a pair of three pointers, and Mack Hepper and Liam Johnston both hit another to even the score at 31-31 with 6:43 to play. The teams traded points down the stretch of the half that saw PLU enter the locker room with a 41-40 lead.

The Blues took control in the second half. After an early three pointer from Miles Nash tied the game, Whitman held the Lutes scoreless for nearly five minutes and went on a 13-3 run to go up 10 with 13:39 to play.

PLU shaved the lead to four points with just under eight minutes to play, but that was as close as they would get as Whitman closed the game on a 21-5 run and won going away.

Whitman continues its early conference season homestand next weekend against Lewis & Clark and Willamette.
