Women's Volleyball Ousted By Whitworth In Four Sets

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Despite a gritty defensive showing and rallies late in the match, the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Whitworth University in Northwest Conference play Tuesday night at Sherwood Center. Set scores were 21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-18.

Moana Massey had a solid evening for the Blues (7-11, 6-5 NWC) with match highs of 27 assists and 19 digs. Addie Belt also posted 19 digs to share in that match-best stat and chipped in 10 kills for a double double. Arina Gushchina posted a team-best 12 kills.

Both teams struggled to gain offensive momentum in the opening frames, with neither side hitting above .200 for the night. Whitman's defense worked hard behind Jamie Bartok and Massey, who helped keep long rallies alive and took control with an opening set win.

Whitworth pulled away to even the set score and looked certain to take a 2-1 lead, but a late Whitman rally put the result in question. Ultimately a service error sealed the win as the Pirates went up in the match.

Set four saw Gushchina spark a comeback with several big kills, while Belt added strong presence at the net with key blocks. The set encapsulated Whitman's resilience but ultimately the result went in favor of the Bucs who walked away with a four set win.

Whitman returns to action on Friday against Linfield. First serve at the Sherwood Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
