Blues Rally From Two Sets Down To Defeat Linfield

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's volleyball team pulled off an impressive comeback victory Friday night at the Sherwood Center, overcoming a two-set deficit to defeat Linfield University 18-25, 14-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-6 and remain firmly in contention for a Northwest Conference postseason berth.

After a sluggish start that saw the Blues (8-11, 7-5 NWC) struggle to find rhythm through the first two sets, Whitman flipped the match in the third with a revived attack led by setter Moana Massey and outside hitters Sammy Holmer and Sophie Broesamle. Holmer paced the Blues with a team-high 10 kills to go along with 10 digs.

Lilli Thompson and Bella Vickers were instrumental in shifting momentum in sets three and four to help Whitman even the match. Defensively, libero Jamie Bartok recorded a team-high 14 digs, while Holmer and Pruse each chipped in on pivotal block assists at the net.

The Blues recorded six team blocks to Linfield's four and minimized errors late to close out the decisive fifth set.

In the final frame, Whitman leapt out to a commanding lead behind back-to-back service aces from Holmer and crisp setting by Pruse. The Blues hit .357 in the set while holding Linfield to a negative hitting percentage, sealing the 15-6 victory before an excited Sherwood Center crowd.

The Blues don't resume play until Friday, Oct. 31 when they host Lewis & Clark at 7:00 p.m.
