Men's Basketball Cruises Past Northwest Indian College

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's basketball team overwhelmed Northwest Indian College 107-55 on Saturday night at Sherwood Center, riding a blistering first-half start and a team-high 21 points from Ali Efe Isik to close December in style.

Whitman set the tone immediately, racing out to a 10-0 lead behind layups from Jacob Fotu and Milos Sarenac, and a pair of smooth jumpers from Isik as the Blues controlled the glass and the tempo. Ken Higgins and Djordje Lazarevic joined the barrage from deep, and by the time Isik buried a jumper in the final seconds, Whitman had built a 55-22 halftime cushion while shooting better than 60 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

Isik was nearly unstoppable at all three levels, knocking down three triples, attacking off the bounce, and converting at the foul line on his way to an impressive stat line. Higgins provided the perfect perimeter complement, drilling five threes and finishing with a career-high 19 points as he repeatedly punished late closeouts from both wings and the top of the key.

Early in the first half, Sarenac pushed the ball after a defensive rebound and hit Fotu in stride for a fast-break layup that put Whitman up 6-0. Moments later, Isik jumped a passing lane near midcourt, took it the other way, and pulled up for a transition three from the right wing, stretching the lead to 14-3 and forcing Northwest Indian to call a timeout.

Midway through the period, Drew Flinn kept the momentum rolling when he tipped in a missed jumper for a second-chance bucket, pushing the margin to 23-7 as Whitman's bench joined the surge. Near the end of the half, Higgins stole a pass near the sideline and, a few possessions later, drilled a deep three off an Isik kick-out to make it 53-22. Isik capped the half with a jumper for the 33-point advantage.

Fred Lewis led the Eagles with a game-high 23 points.

Whitman now turns its attention to Northwest Conference play which begins just after the new year. The Blues open at home on Friday, Jan. 2 against Pacific.
