WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's basketball team had hoped to return its winning ways but came up short in its first home game in three weeks, falling to George Fox 99-78 in Northwest Conference action on Friday night at the Sherwood Center.
Both teams shot it well as the Bruins hit 52% from the floor compared to Whitman who shot 46%. The difference came in the turnover battle as the Blues turned over the ball a season-high 19 times, often struggling to penetrate a full court press from the Bruins.
Four Blues (9-13, 7-6 NWC) scored in double figures but couldn't help their team slip into a three-way tie for third in the league standings with George Fox (11-11, 7-6 NWC) and Lewis & Clark. Alex Pape and Bernard Dzesi both shot 6-8 from the field for 17 points, Isaiah Amato posted 10 points and six rebounds and Milos Sarenac added 10 points off the bench.
Samuel Stewart led all scorers with 23 points off the Bruin bench, and Momo Stokes chipped in 15 more.
George Fox also had a solid shooting night from beyond the arc, hitting at a 55% clip which included a handful made in the second half to squash Whitman runs.
The Blues will look to right the ship on Saturday when they host Pacific for Senior Night at the Sherwood Center. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
