Baseball Tops PLU, Linfield To Close NWC Round Robin

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Tristan Buehring tripled in a pair of runs in the opener, Jack Bickerton delivered a grand slam in game two and the Whitman College baseball team closed out the NWC Round Robin on Saturday with dominant wins over Pacific Lutheran then host Linfield.

Whitman 9 Pacific Lutheran 1
Wyatt Adams (1-0) earned the win for the Blues in the opener with an impressive outing of seven complete innings. He allowed only one run on four hits and struck out seven batters.

Maguire and Buehring provided the sparks for the Blues (2-1). Maguire (1 H, 2 RBI) doubled home a run in the third inning and two innings later drove home another with a sacrifice fly. Later, with the Blues up by five runs in the seventh inning, Buehring (2 H, 1 R, 2 RBI) put the game to bed with his two-run triple, scoring Halen Otte ( 1 H, 1 R) and Brandon Ting (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) to put his team up 8-1.

PLU starter Matthew Sherwood was tagged with the loss. He allowed six runs - only two earned - in four and two-thirds innings to go along with five strikeouts.

Nate Korahais also had an excellent outing in the Whitman order with one hit, two runs and two RBI

Whitman 13 Linfield 1
Bickerton set the tone early for the Blues who went on to rout Linfield. The Blues manufactured a bases loaded situation in the third inning trailing by a run. Bickerton changed the tone of the game with one swing of the bat, homering to put his team up 4-1. The inning wasn't over, however, as Maguire singled and later scored to increase the Whitman lead.

The Blues put the game to bed with a four-run sixth inning to go up 9-1 and all but seal the win. Bickerton and Maguire provided the punch at the top of the Whitman order. Bickerton (1 H, 3 R, 4 RBI) scored a pair runs outside of his grand slam and Maguire batted 2-3 with three runs and four RBI.

Oliver Brown (1-0 ) had a solid first outing for the Blues. He struck out seven in five complete innings while allowing one run on three hits.

Linfield starter Garrett Games (0-1) worked four complete innings but was hit with the loss after giving up five earned runs on three hits.

The rains came with one out in the sixth inning and halted the game which still went in the books as a Whitman win.
