Women's Tennis Falls At No. 29 Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. - The Whitman College women's tennis team earned the doubles point but won only one match in singles en route to a 5-2 defeat at No. 29 Caltech on Thursday.

The loss breaks a nine-match winning streak for the Blues (11-3) who last lost nearly six weeks ago at Lewis-Clark State College on a day they fielded a split squad.

Whitman looked to be in good shape after winning two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles. The Blues fell behind after a loss on the No. 3 court, but Jin Yu and Teleya Blunt cruised at first doubles to even the score. Ariana Castellanos and Nana Vang then earned a hard-fought 7-5 win at the two to claim the point for their team.

The Beavers won the first four singles results to go final, all in straight sets, to clinch the match.

The No. 1 and No. 2 courts featured two competitive matches as both went to a third set. Blunt took down Yoyo Benchetrit 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (6) for Whitman's lone singles point.

The Blues close their road trip on Friday at Chapman. Start time is set for 5:00 p.m.,
