SALEM, Ore. - The Whitman College baseball team earned an important win on Saturday at Willamette, beating the Bearcats 5-2 to win the three-game series and move into first place in the Northwest Conference with nine games to play.
Whitman rode the arm of Russell Petersen (3-4) who pitched a complete game, allowing two ninth-inning runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. He allowed back-to-back two-out, RBI hits but was able to punch out Baskin to close out the win.
The Blues (18-12, 9-6 NWC) lead Whitworth by mere percentage points for the top spot in the standings and also have two more games at hand.
Halen Otte (2 H, 1 R, 3 RBI) and Jack Bickerton (2 H, 1 R, 2 RBI) provided the offense early for the Blues who then handed Petersen the keys. Otte doubled in a pair of runs in the first then drove in another with a base hit in the third. Bickerton tacked on another two with his two-run blast in the third.
Petersen took care of the rest and threw eight consecutive scoreless innings.
Patrick Lau led the Bearcats with two hits, one run and one RBI.
