Men's Tennis Tops George Fox To Win the NWC Championship

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - After years of Northwest Conference dominance by the Whitman College men's tennis team, the Blues recently have been knocked off their pedestal. That all changed on Sunday when Whitman took down George Fox 4-1 in the championship match of the Northwest Conference Tournament held at the Whitman Tennis Courts.

The win was the 16th NWC Tournament title overall but first since 2019. The Blues now earn the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament held next month.

Artem Manov provided the match-clinching point on the No. 4 court in a thrilling second-set tiebreak comeback to complete a 6-2, 7-6 (6) sweep over Keita Shoji. Manov rallied after dropping the first two points of the tiebreaker, but later found himself staring down the barrel of a triple set point by Shoji. He again rallied, staving off every one of them before capitalizing on his first match point to claim the title for the Blues.

The Blues set the stage for the victory in doubles play with dominant wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts to earn the doubles point. The Blues jumped out in front 3-0 after convincing sweeps by Lucas Huang at the two and Alexander Stage at the three.

Cameron Yang rallied but fell in three sets on the No. 2 court only moments before Manov's championship-clinching victory.
