Baseball Splits Twinbill at PLU

TACOMA, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team began its final road series with a doubleheader split against Pacific Lutheran in Northwest Conference action on Saturday. Whitman dropped the opener 11-4 but rallied for an 8-6 win in game two.

PLU 11 Whitman 4
A combined 10 runs in the sixth inning told the tale of the Lutes' game one win. Trailing by a run in the top of the sixth, the Blues found offense in a big way when Brandon Ting (2 H, 1 R, 3 RBI) cleared the bases with a three-run double. Jack Bicketon (3 H, 1 RBI) then doubled in Ting as Whitman put four on the board in the sixth.

PLU tied the game and tacked on three more runs in its half of the sixth. Already plating two, the Lutes tied the game when Rochne Beechum (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) drew a bases loaded walk from Whitman starter Wyatt Adams. Hayden Kaiser then provided the biggest hit of the inning when he drove home a pair with his only base hit of the game.

Adams (4-4) threw six complete innings but received the loss after surrendering seven earned runs on 12 hits. Alex Lopez pitched a complete game for the win, allowing four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.

Whitman 8 PLU 6
The nightcap saw the offensive explosion come in the eighth inning with nine combined runs scored. This time it gave the Blues an upper hand they would not secede. With Whitman already up by a run, Halen Otte (2 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI) slammed a pitch out of the park for a three-run homer to extend the lead. Nate Korahais (2 H, 1 R, 2 RBI) then put his stamp on the game later in the inning, driving home a pair of runs with a two-run triple.

The Korahais triple proved to be much-needed insurance as the Lutes scored four in the bottom half of the eighth, but that would be it for the game as the Blues held on for the split.

Oliver Brown (6-2) worked a strong six complete innings for the win. He allowed three runs, only one earned, while allowing two hits and striking out five. Rylan Burigsay recorded the final out in the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth for the save.

The Blues and Lutes conclude their series on Sunday with another noon doubleheader. Game one will be the NWC series finale with the second game played as a non-conference competition.
