Baseball Drops Two To Pacific

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team entered the day atop the Northwest Conference standings, but slipped to third after dropping both games of a doubleheader to Pacific on Saturday afternoon at Borleske Stadium.

The losses snapped a three-game conference winning streak by the Blues who hope to salvage a win in the series when the two teams square off in Sunday's finale at noon.

Pacific 11 Whitman 8
Hitting was on display in the see-saw opener of the doubleheader. A handful of Blues (14-10, 6-5 NWC) had solid days at the plate headlined by Jonah Chang who recorded four hits and scored a run. Jack Bickerton had two hits, one run and three RBI which included a two-run double to put the Blues up in the first inning.

Halen Otte chipped in one hit, two runs and an RBI which included drawing a bases-loaded walk to tie the game in the sixth inning. Beck Maguire added three hits and scored a run.

Nishina led the Boxers with three hits and an RBI and Hamura and Koester both added two hits, two runs and one RBI.

The Blues led by a run after six innings, but imploded when they gave up five to Pacific in the eighth. The inning was highlighted by a pair of two-run base hits as Whitman trailed by five runs heading into their half of the eighth. Tristan Buehring tripled in a pair of runs to cut into the deficit, but that would be as close as they would get.

The nightcap saw Oliver Brown (5-1) take his first loss of the season after allowing five earned runs on seven hits and striking out six in six complete innings. Nate Petz had an excellent game at the plate with one double, a triple and three runs scored.

Maguire and Nate Korahais both had two hits with Maguire adding a run and an RBI and Korahais also driving in a pair of runs.

Lewis paced the Boxers with four hits, one run and three RBI in a game that his team led from start to finish. Whitman threatened all game long to tie or take the lead, but five Pacific runs across the sixth and seventh innings helped the pull away.
