Women's Volleyball Splits At Whit Classic To Open Season

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitman College women's volleyball team served up the season, splitting a pair of matches on Friday at the Whit Classic hosted by Whitworth University at the Whitworth Fieldhouse. The Blues fell handily to Northwest (WA) in the opener before notching a thrilling five-set win over Carlton.

Northwest (WA) 3 Whitman 0
The season opener saw a straight loss by the Blues (1-1) to the Eagles, but the result could have been altered in the first set as the Blues took the lead midway through and led late in the frame. Northwest rallied however and sent the set to extra points. Arina Gushchina and Sophie Broesamle each drilled kills to stave off set points but the Eagles pulled out the win.
Northwest won handily in set two and pulled away in set three for the win.

Gushchina had her team's high mark of 14 kills, but Broesamle and Lilli Thompson proved to be the most efficient on attack. Thompson posted no errors and hit at a .400 clip with six kills, and Broesamle hit above the Mendoza line as well with a .217 percentage and nine kills.

Gushchina and Lola Folk did the work on the defensive side of the net, both posting four blocks to help Whitman to a 10-5 team block advantage for the match.

Kaitlyn Mickle led all hitters for the Eagles with 15 kills and Ellie Van Berkum added 18 digs, also a match high.

Whitman 3 Carlton 2

The Blues showed grit and determination in the nightcap and rallied from two sets down to pull away late in the fifth and deciding set to claim the win over Carlton.

Whitman showcased impressive performances on both sides of the net and hit at a solid .280 clip as a team for the match. Haylee Pruse orchestrated the offense to the tune of a match-high 54 assists while contributing six service aces, also a match-best.

Jamie Bartok delivered a career-best performance of 30 kills, and Pruse added 10 more for her impressive all around performance.

The Blues featured four players who posted double figures in kills. Broesamle again was efficient in her swings, drilling 16 kills and committing only four errors for a .343 attack percentage. Gushchina again posted a team-high kills mark, this time with 17, and Nadia Shepherd and Folk both chipped in 10 more.

Rachel Bingham led the Knights (0-2) with 16 kills.

Whitman concludes the Classic on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. match against Texas Lutheran University.
