Women's Volleyball Swept In Final Whit Classic Match

SPOKANE, Wash. - Arina Gushchina posted a match-high 10 kills but her team was dominated at the net as the Whitman College women's volleyball team closed out the Whit Classic with a straight set loss to Texas Lutheran on Saturday at the Whitworth Fieldhouse. Set scores were 25-22, 25-20, 25-15.

The Blues (1-2) had hoped to close their opening weekend with a winning record, but ran into a physical TLU team that delivered 12 blocks with Whitman only mustering two.

Lilli Thompson added nine kills but her team had difficulty finding the seams and hit just .067 for the match. Jamie Bartok did a solid job defensively with a match-high 20 digs and Haylee Pruse added 21 assists, also a match high.

For TLU, Moriah Williams shared match-high honors with Gushchina also with 10 kills. Briana Salvatierra-Moore added nine more and a match-high nine blocks.

Whitman hits the road again next weekend for the Whittier Invitational. It will play a pair of matches on both Friday and Saturday before returning home to begin Northwest Conference play.
