Women's Volleyball Drops A Pair At Whittier Invitational

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whitman College women's volleyball team had hoped to return to its winning ways, but suffered a pair of losses to Chapman and host Whittier on the opening day of the Whittier Invitational.

Chapman 3 Whitman 1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18)
The opener saw Bella Vickers drill a match-high 12 kills. Lilli Thompson and Melia Ferraro equaled match bests of five blocks and 18 assists, respectively, but none of it led Whitman to victory in a four-set loss to the Panthers.

As evidenced by the very comparable team and individual stats, all four sets came down to the wire with Whitman able to win the opening set but fall by a whisker in each of the final three. Chapman did hit a bit better with a .238 to .123 attack percentage advantage.

Vickers's 13 kills came on a more than efficient .429 clip where she recorded only four errors. She also registered 10 digs for a double double, one behind Jamie Bartok's team-high 11 digs.

Olivia Sampson put up 12 kills and nine digs for Chapman and Clara Cronin chipped in a match-high 14 digs.

Whittier 3 Whitman 0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-12)
The afternoon match proved to be no contests as the Poets cruised to a three-set win. Addie Belt led the Blues with six kills, and Haylee Pruse and Lexie Uchima posted 10 assists and digs, respectively.

Belt hit at a .462 clip and posted no errors, but that couldn't overcome a .131 attack percentage for the team.

Malena The led all hitters for the Poets with 11 kills and Mia D'Amato added 10 more. Jessica Ferreira delivered a match-high 14 digs.

The Blues continue tournament play on Saturday with matches against La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer.
