Women's Volleyball Falls To No. 7 La Verne, Edged In Five Sets At Pomona

The Whitman College women's volleyball team fought valiantly but came short in a pair of matches on Saturday. They first fell at No. 7 University of La Verne before dropping a five-set thriller at Pomona-Pitzer to close the trip

La Verne 3 Whitman 0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-13)
La VERNE, Calif. - Whitman faced a daunting task against La Verne who entered the match ranked No. 7 nationally after a 2024 NCAA quarterfinal appearance. Whitman turned out to be completely outmatched as the Leopards, last season's SCIAC champions, swept with dominant victories in all three sets in a 25-13, 25-14, 25-13 loss at the Sports Science Athletic Pavilion.

Addie Belt led the Blues offensively with five kills, Haley Pruse posted nine assists, and Sammy Holmer and Melia Ferraro shared team-high honors each with six digs.

Whitman (1-5) struggled to find rhythm at the net, ultimately finishing with a negative hitting percentage (.062) for the match.

La Verne (5-0) hit at a .250 clip led by an impressive performance from All-America candidate Mya Ray who drilled a match-high 15 kills with only one error for a .500 attack percentage.

Aside from the opening set, the Leopards got off to fast starts before cruising to the win.

Pomona-Pitzer 3 Whitman 2 (21-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 16-14)
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The fourth and final match of the road trip seemed to be an auspicious one but instead turned into a thriller where the Sagehens rallied and staved off a Whitman match point in the fifth set to prevail.

Arina Gushchina was the key offensive figure for the Blues and put up solid numbers of 18 kills at a .283 hitting clip which, in part, helped her team win the opening two sets. Pomona hit just a bit better as a team but quality defensive performances by Jamie Bartok (19 digs), Belt (14 digs) and Pruse (13 digs) kept Whitman in the match.

Coupled with her double figures in kills (11) and digs, Belt also chipped in five blocks. Pruse added a team-best 24 assists.

Paige Mountanos led the way for the Sagehens (3-4) with 25 kills and Corrina Benson added 33 digs. Both were match highs.

The Blues now return home for a near-two week break between matches. They next hit the court on Friday, Sept. 19 for their home and Northwest Conference opener against Willamette.
