Women's Volleyball Tops Willamette In Five-Set, Northwest Conference Thriller

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In a series of twists and turns, late set heroics, great defense and, at times, better offense, the Whitman College women's volleyball team outlasted Willamette in five sets on Friday night in the team's home and Northwest Conference opener at the Sherwood Cneter. Set scores were 25-23, 31-33, 30-28, 14-25, 15-10

Addie Belt delivered a double double for the Blues (2-6, 1-0 NWC) with 16 kills and 17 digs, and Kendall Herman hit at an ever-efficient .619 clip for 13 kills and zero errors. Sammy Holmer recorded 14 kills and 12 digs and Jamie Bartok chipped in 15 digs.

Katey Cramer and Dream Takemoto had match-highs of 23 kills and 18 digs, respectively, for the Bearcats (3-6, 1-1 NWC).

The Blues and Bearcats exchanged blows all night with great play on both sides of the net and with neither side able to create much separation. Whitman took the opening set narrowly, but Willamette responded with a win in the second, pushing the set into extra points before closing it out. The third set was just as tight, stretching beyond 25 once again as the Blues clawed out a win to regain momentum.

Willamette evened the match in the fourth, resetting the stage for a decisive fifth set. There, Whitman wasted no time, jumping out to an early lead behind strong serving and disciplined defense. The Blues held off Willamette's final push, sealing the victory and showcasing their resilience in a night marked by long rallies and hard-fought points.

With the win, Whitman highlighted both their defensive toughness and their composure under pressure, edging out a rival in a match packed with energy and momentum swings.

Whitman will look to complete a perfect weekend when it hosts Pacific on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
